Prosol UK was appointed as a specialist contractor by Piggot & Whitfield to undertake refurbishment works to the existing theatre facilities at Blackburn Hospital. The project was delivered within a live, operational clinical environment, requiring a high level of control, coordination and sensitivity to ongoing hospital activity.
The scope of works focused on targeted upgrades to enhance fire safety compliance and improve the internal condition of the theatre spaces. This included firestopping works to existing walls to reinstate and improve compartmentation integrity, ensuring compliance with current fire safety requirements. Alongside the fire safety upgrades, Prosol UK undertook improvements to internal finishes within the theatres, delivering a refreshed and compliant clinical environment suitable for continued operational use.
Works were carefully planned and sequenced to integrate with the wider refurbishment programme and to minimise disruption to theatre operations. Prosol UK coordinated closely with the client team, hospital estates representatives and other trades on site to manage interfaces and maintain programme continuity. Quality was embedded throughout delivery, with structured inspections carried out at key stages, followed by a formal snagging and close-out process. All works were handed over to a high standard, meeting both clinical and client expectations.
Key Challenges
The primary challenge was working within a live and operational theatre environment, where dust, noise and infection control risks had to be tightly managed.
This was addressed through the installation of fully segregated work areas, robust dust control measures, enhanced housekeeping regimes and continuous monitoring to protect adjacent clinical spaces.
Maintaining patient safety and continuity of services required close stakeholder engagement and flexibility in programming. Works were coordinated around theatre activity, with clear communication and advance planning to ensure minimal impact on hospital operations.
Another key challenge was delivering consistent quality within an existing building fabric, where legacy conditions required careful assessment and adaptation. This was mitigated through experienced supervision, methodical installation of firestopping systems, and a structured inspection and snagging process prior to handover.
Through proactive planning, effective dust and infection control, and a strong focus on quality assurance, Prosol UK successfully delivered the refurbishment works safely, compliantly and to a high standard within a live hospital environment.
